Building Your Solo Practice From Zero

A practical checklist for solo lawyers building towards their first ten matters

Coming Soon

Starting your own legal practice is one thing.

Building a case load of work when you have no established clients, no existing matters and no reliable flow of referrals is another.

You may already be an experienced lawyer.

You may be very good at the legal work.

Once you are practising on your own, you still need to work out where those first matters are actually going to come from.

We are developing a new practical checklist for solo lawyers who are starting from zero and need to begin building their first real book of work.

The focus is simple:

How do you create the relationships, conversations and opportunities that start turning into your first matters?

The checklist will look at practical issues including:

  • telling the right people what you are now doing

  • finding worthwhile early work without simply taking everything

  • going where work already exists

  • building relationships with lawyers and other professional referrers

  • making yourself easy to engage and easy to refer

  • following up genuine opportunities

  • turning early matters into repeat work and referrals

  • working out what you are beginning to become known for

  • reviewing your first ten matters to see what is actually working

The first objective is not to build the perfect solo practice.

It is to create momentum.

Who It Is For

This checklist is being developed for lawyers who:

  • are starting a solo practice without an established book of work

  • have legal experience but no reliable personal flow of clients or matters

  • are moving from employment or partnership into solo practice

  • need to generate their first genuine flow of work

  • want to build stronger referral relationships from the beginning

  • want a more deliberate approach to building a solo practice

This is not primarily a marketing checklist for an already established practice.

It will be relevant to solo lawyers across Australia and internationally, although professional obligations and practice requirements naturally vary between jurisdictions.
