Starting Solo? Three Things You Can Do Now to Find Your First Matters
Starting your own law practice is one thing.
Finding your first clients and matters is another.
You don't need to wait until your practice is fully established to begin developing your first lot of caseload work.
Here are three things we think are worth doing now.
1. Identify Where Your First Matters Might Realistically Come From
Write down the lawyers, professional contacts, former colleagues and existing relationships most likely to introduce suitable work.
Don't assume people know you've gone solo or understand what matters you want.
2. Be Clear About The Work You Want
Identify the types of matters you're equipped to handle, the clients you want to serve and the work you should decline.
Taking every available matter is not necessarily the foundation of a sustainable solo practice.
3. Start Some Serious Conversations
Contact people individually. Explain what you're doing, where your experience lies and how you might assist their clients or contacts.
Focus on building genuine professional relationships rather than immediately asking for referrals.
Why Your First Ten Matters Matter
We believe your first ten matters can teach you a great deal about the practice you're actually building, rather than the one you initially imagined.
Where the work comes from, the clients you attract and the matters you accept and don’t accept, all help shape your future practice.
