The areas of law I have enjoyed practising most have invariably been niche or emerging areas.

Usually, they were connected to interests I already had.

Sometimes an area simply struck a particular chord with me.

And, frankly, sometimes I also thought it might prove financially fruitful.

When developing a niche feels natural

Becoming known for niche areas was not especially difficult.

It was because I enjoyed the work and, in some cases, was already immersed in the world surrounding it.

I was genuinely interested.

Art law as an example

Art is a good example from my own practice.

I have always been interested in art.

Spending time with artists, gallery owners and others working in the industry did not feel like a deliberate exercise in “niching”.

I enjoyed talking with them, seeing their work and learning how their businesses operated.

It was an extension of an interest I already had.

Over the years, I have helped many artists, gallery owners and others working in the art world.

In turn, I have learnt a great deal from them.

Pay attention to what already draws you in

A worthwhile niche may already be closer than you think.

The most sustainable niche may not be the one you select because someone like me tells you to.

It may just be the one you were already moving towards.
