Solo Lawyers Carry Far Too Much Outstanding Fee Debt
What shocks us even more is how easily lawyers give up following it up because they are uncomfortable doing so
Pick Up The Phone And Follow It Up
I am not suggesting every debt needs to be sued on or sent off for collection.
But at the very least, the lawyer should pick up the phone and follow it up.
Yes, the phone.
Not email.
And yes, I mean the lawyer.
Too busy.
Too hard.
“I do not like doing this stuff, Paul.”
I get it.
Neither do I.
What Advice Would You Give A Debt Recovery Client?
But what advice would you, as a lawyer, give a debt recovery client who came in to see you?
Do nothing?
I do not think so.
Every Late Payment Or Bad Debt Should Tell You Something
Every late payment or bad debt should tell you something about your:
pricing
scoping
client selection
billing
follow-up system
At the very least, it should be a lesson for next time, or from here on.
Doing Nothing Is Not The Answer
Unpaid fees are a huge issue for solo lawyers.
Doing nothing about them is not the answer.
Do something.
Your cash flow matters enormously as a solo lawyer.
