Why I Went Solo - To Do Work I Love
I went solo to practise law on my own terms and do more of the work I love.
Passion, purpose and professional satisfaction still matter.
Being passionate about the law I practise as a solo lawyer has kept me happy and sane (two words I use with caution) as I could reasonably expect to be in this profession.
I love what I do.
And I went solo so I could do more of it on my own terms.
Life is too short to spend it merely chasing money, pursuing the next big thing or settling for average as a solo lawyer.
Whenever I have found that I no longer enjoy the work I am doing, I have taken action to change it.
I have done this numerous times throughout my working life, sometimes to my financial detriment.
That is a price I have been prepared to pay.
Of course, money matters.
Even a solo practice must be profitable and sustainable.
Money alone is not enough however.
Law may be a job in the practical sense. Even perhaps if you are a solo lawyer.
There is no doubt you need to pay the bills and support your family.
However it should never just be treated as merely just a job.
It is also a profession, with its own unique set of responsibilities, standards and obligations.
As a solo law firm owner, you juggle a job, a profession and a business to run.
So in my view, enjoying it all matters.
If you have gone solo but no longer love the practice you have built, it may be time to step back and decide what needs to change.
