How To Create And Grow A Legal Niche

You can have one legal niche, several niches, or niches sitting alongside your core practice areas

Creating and growing them however takes time and patience

If you follow our work, you will know I have been banging on about niching and being known for something unique as a lawyer for a long, long time.

I am not a hypocrite either.

I have specialised and niched quite a few times throughout my legal career, to varying degrees of success, but always with a strong focus on being enthusiastic about, and genuinely enjoying, the subject matter of my niche or specialisation.

You Can Have More Than One Legal Niche

Yes, you can have a niche, two niches, or many niches, all sitting side by side with the core areas of practice you do as a solo lawyer.

A niche does not necessarily require you to abandon the rest of your practice.

It can sit alongside your existing work while you gradually become known for something more specific.

Choose Something You Genuinely Enjoy

There should be a strong focus on being enthusiastic about, and genuinely enjoying, the subject matter of your niche or specialisation.

Creating and growing a niche will take time.

You will need to keep learning, talking about the subject and building your reputation around it.

That is difficult to sustain if you do not genuinely enjoy the work.

Creating A Legal Niche Takes Time

It will take time.

You will need patience.

This is not about how to create a legal niche within 90 days.

You may be able to choose a niche within 90 days. You may be able to start writing about it, speaking about it and positioning yourself around it.

But becoming known for it is going to take some time.

Start Today

The best time to have started a niche was five years ago.

The second-best time is today.

Our guide will help you create and grow a legal niche.

We work directly with solicitors, barristers, and consultant lawyers on the decisions that shape an independent practice - set up, structure, positioning, pricing, systems, capacity, financial control, AI use, and strategic direction.

This is practical, experience-based advisory work for lawyers who want a stronger, better-run practice and clearer judgment about what needs to change next.

You can work with us through a Strategy Session or a Solo Law Firm Tune-Up.

We also offer practical tools, guides and webinars for lawyers who want to get on top of these issues properly.
