Before You Scale A Solo Law Practice, Check The Foundations

Thinking about growing your solo law practice? Before adding people, costs or complexity, make sure the practice is profitable, controlled and sustainable.

Not every solo lawyer wants to scale their practice.

Some want a practice that gives them freedom to do things their own way as well as more control over their work and their life.

There is nothing wrong with that.

Others want to see how far they can grow the practice.

That requires planning.

Before you set up.

While you are setting up.

A year or two in.

And especially at the three-to-five-year mark.

By then, you should have a much clearer idea of how far the practice can grow, whether you still want to grow it, and what comes next.

If you intend to scale, the ground floor of the house has to be solid before you put a second floor on top of it.

The foundations need to be there from day one.

Whatever you intend to build later has to be supported by the practice you have now.

That means taking a proper 360-degree look at how the firm operates.

At that stage, three things matter.

Is the practice profitable?

Is it controlled?

Is it sustainable?

If those things are not in place, adding more on top will usually make the problems bigger.

Plan for your alterations and additions to your practice, like you would your home.
